Nowadays fuel efficiency and emission reduction are crucial factors in the automotive industry, especially for trucks. Since individual components are fairly optimized, one has to consider the vehicle as a whole and optimize its control strategies. For this purpose it is vital to not only include currently available information (velocity, engine temperature,...) but also future data (height profile, speed limits,...) in the optimization, which is then called predictive control. Our approach uses a dynamic programming scheme to determine an optimal velocity profile as well as an optimal shifting strategy for a truck based on the information about the upcoming route under certain drive-ability criteria.
