Structure Topology Optimization: New progress and application for MEMS design

Structure topology optimization method has gained much attention in the design of mechanisms, functional materials and MEMS. To date, there are several approaches which can be used to implement topology optimization. We will first review the basic procedure to implement structure topology optimization by the element-density design variable method, and then introduce some progresses by the point-density design variable method and the level set method. Some examples, such as compliance minimization structure, compliance mechanism, electro-mechanic coupled problem, are presented to illustrate the performance of structure topology optimization in MEMS design.
