In this talk, we will present matrix-free solution methods to phase-field fracture problems. Matrix-free methods can be particularly useful in this context: it avoids reassembling the Jacobian every time the linearization point, active-set or mesh changes. The active-set method is required for the treatment of the variational inequality, resulting from the crack irreversibility condition. Furthermore, we will show some preliminary numerical results and discuss some of the challenges that have not yet been fully resolved.
