In this talk, the discretization of an elliptic boundary value problem by means of the hp-version of the finite element method is considered. The presentation starts with a motivation for high order finite elements. Later, we define suitable shape functions for triangular and tetrahedral elements such that the local element stiffness matrices are sparse.

In the last part of the talk, we present a solver for an interface concentrated finite element discretization.

The presented results are collaborations with T. Eibner (Chemnitz), U. Langer, V. Pillwein (Linz), and J. Schöberl (Aachen).
