Sums, products and growth of sets

The sum-product phenomenon and its surrounding problems encapsulate theidea that additive and multiplicative structures within sets of numbersare very different, and cannot coexist. This manifests itself most famously in the Erdos-Szemeredi Conjecture.
In this introductory/survey talk, I will discuss some selected interpretations of this idea, with a bias towards my favourite problems in the area.
