Johannes Kepler Symposium on Mathematics

As part of the Johannes Kepler symposium on mathematics Dr. Oliver Roche-Newton, Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM), Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), will give a public talk (followed by a discussion) on Wed, Jan. 27, 2021 at 16:00 o'clock at ZOOM on the topic of "Sums, products and growth of sets" . The organziers of the symposium,

O.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ulrich Langer,
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Larcher
A.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jürgen Maaß, and
die ÖMG (Österreichische Mathematische Gesellschaft),

hereby cordially invite you.

Series B - Mathematical Colloquium:

The intention is to present new mathematical results for an audience interested in general mathematics.

Sums, products and growth of sets

The sum-product phenomenon and its surrounding problems encapsulate the idea that additive and multiplicative structures within sets of numbers are very different, and cannot coexist. This manifests itself most famously in the Erdos-Szemeredi Conjecture.

In this introductory/survey talk, I will discuss some selected interpretations of this idea, with a bias towards my favourite problems in the area.
