We discuss over- and underdetermined systems of nonlinear differential-algebraic equations. Such equations arise in many applications in circuit and multibody system simulation,or in the solution of control problems. We give a general (local) existence and uniqueness theory and apply the results to nonlinear control problems. We also obtain new numerical methods and a new index reduction technique for the numerical treatment of differential-algebraic systems with extra structure. These include multibody systems and circuit simulation problems and semidiscretized Navier-Stokes equations.
