In this talk I will review some recent work on space-time finite element methods for the wave equation. First we discuss the variational formulation in the energy Sobolev space whose discretization requires an appropriate CFL condition for stability. Following the work of Zlotnik we then consider a stabilized formulation which is unconditionally stable. We also comment on the equivalence of the variational formulation in the energy space with the first order system for the wave equation, and we derive an alternative construction of the Zlotnik stabilization.

The talk is based on joint work with M. Zank (U Wien).
